The Globalization of Dating

Updated: Oct 25, 2024

Traditionally, within the context of dating, the location of someone has been a potential negative factor in the success of the relationship, or even a nonexistent factor.

Before the internet, people would rarely meet or connect with others around the world, because it was much less feasible.

Essentially, you knew whoever was close to you in your town, at the most meeting people who immigrated to your country, probably in a big city.

Air travel was possible, of course, but the idea of flying to another country for the chance of finding a partner, or meeting a romantic interest, was not very prominent.

However, with the invention of the internet and its associated technology, the geographical distance between a person and their potential life partner is much less of a negative factor as it once was, and according to studies, a long distance between partners may even have its benefits.

The World Wide Web (Of Romance?)

It's rarely argued against. The invention of the internet forever changed the way we connect with each other. It was truly the opening of Pandora's Box (if there is a box).

Now we can not only connect with and chat with our loved ones in our town or country at any time, but we can even connect with others across the globe.

The news has become global, and we can see in real time the happenings of folks in another country, another culture.

Memes and TikTok videos reign supreme and a viral video can come from anywhere in the world at any time, further giving us a glimpse of how people live in other countries.

We can connect with these people quite easily with social media and messenger apps, and build relationships with them as well.

It's a Small World

If you've ever heard someone talk about their long distance relationship, you've likely had questions in your mind about how serious this relationship truly was, and is it even real?

This type of thinking is more and more becoming a thing of the past, as more people are engaging in relationships with others around the world.

And while there traditionally have been negative stigmas attached to long distance relationships, those in the scientific community have actually studied them and found some interesting points.

According to a study published in the Journal of Communication, researchers found that "emotional connections felt in long-distance relationships may be equally strong or stronger than their counterparts who are geographically close."

The study also said that couples in long distance relationships engage in more "self-disclosure" than those in relationships that are geographically closer.

This makes sense because there is a lack of physical connection in a long distance relationship, so couples have to work harder and be more honest, in a way, in order to create and sustain emotional bonds.

The findings of this particular research show some unique potential benefits to long distance relationships.

Long-Distance Love Becoming More Common

Because of the new feasibility of connecting and meeting someone from across the world, long distance relationships are becoming more common than ever before.

One reason for those living in the West is that traditional dating apps, in their current design, are not meeting the needs of people who are serious about finding a life partner.

Another reason, particularly for men in America, is the lack of available women in America who share the same values and family goals of their male counterparts, and often look at men with disdain and unrealistic expectations.

In the West, this has been a contributing factor to the rise of what social media is calling "Passport Bros", men who travel to other countries to find their life partner, because they feel that the women in other countries appreciate and respect them more than women in the West, while sharing the same values.

With the ease of access to connection with others around the world, and the ability for anyone to find remote work online, long distance relationships are becoming more prevalent because those in the relationship know that the geographical gap can easily be overcome and nullified with only a few steps.
